Midland Railway Centre - Butterley
In a bid to become one of the area's premier visitor attractions, the Midland Railway Centre - Butterley has secured two stages of DDEP funding. The first allowed the Centre to build a new footbridge across the Swanwick Spur line, allowing the line itself to be re-opened. The centre was also able to install state-of-the-art touch screen computer panels to guide people through their museum, and multilingual brochures to cater for their increasing number of international visitors.
The second phase of funding was awarded to dismantle a 130 year-old junction station in Syston, Leicestershire, transport it and then rebuild it brick by brick back in Butterley. A brand new forecourt and approach for the station, giving disabled access and facilities, landscaping, fencing and a complete internal refit are also getting the go-ahead.
