Vocational Warehouse
Access to suitable practical skills training courses for students in the New Mills area used to mean looking over the border to Stockport and Tameside, where they were increasingly being turned away due to oversubscribed courses. And the New Mills Market Town Healthcheck showed that there were a relatively high number of people travelling into New Mills due to the number of employers requiring a skilled workforce, and there were consistent comments from the business sector about college courses not fully equipping students with appropriate the skills, particularly in the construction and engineering fields.
So, with much needed funding from the Rural Action Zone to assist in the conversion of the old swimming pool at New Mills School Business & Enterprise College, the Vocational Warehouse now provides facilities to deliver vocational training in a number of construction skills.
The centre provides training in many fields, including, Introduction to the Construction Industry, Trowelling, Brickwork, Painting and Decorating and Construction Processes & Operations.
The project has been awarded £35,000 by DDEP.
