Wirksworth Rail Link
With the need to join up some of its major tourist attractions, the town of Wirksworth secured funding for a new half-mile railway line that links the town with the village of Ravenstor. This has created a new visitor gateway to the National Stone Centre, the High Peak Trail, the Staple Grange Narrow Gauge Railway and the Middleton Top Engine House.
The DDEP grant has paid for the construction of a new easy access platform at Wirksworth as well as renovating the track and completing all of the associated civil engineering. This is the second phase of a five-year plan to restore all nine miles of track between Ravenstor and Duffield after the route was closed in 1989. Phase one opened up half a mile of track between Wirksworth and Gorsey Bank, and on final completion the project will create a much-needed link with Duffield's Midland Mainline service.
