Chesterfield Townscape Heritage
This project will seek to achieve the significant enhancement and improvement of the townscape within Chesterfield Town Centre, to maximise the impact of its historic buildings and promote the utilisation of vacant floorspace for the benefit of the local economy.
Chesterfield Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) operates within part of Chesterfield town centre offering grant assistance to businesses to repair buildings of historic or architectural value.
Grants are offered so businesses will use traditional materials and methods to repair buildings, therefore preserving or enhancing the area. The scheme also provides grants for businesses to use vacant floorspace within the building for economic purposes. The grant covers works for a developers shell with the business then funding the fixtures and fittings specific for their business.
Ashoka is a good example of what the Chesterfield THI can achieve. The building had a horizontal division of design with the original mock tudor façade on the upper floors and then an Indian inspired shop front. A grant was awarded to reinstate a traditional shop front, carry out repairs and also reuse vacant floorspace to provide additional restaurant space.
The first floor was converted to additional restaurant space, the works included altering the stair access to the first floor and then on to the second floor. On the first floor several walls were removed to open up the space to create a light and airy dining space.
The project has been awarded £809,500.00 by DEP.
