Broadband
In Derbyshire, many rural communities suffer from unreliable internet connectivity, slow broadband connection speeds and reduced mobile phone coverage. In general in the east of the county there is reasonable broadband coverage with various private sector suppliers operating in this area. In the west of the county, broadband delivery has been less satisfactory. The west suffers from limited access and little, if any, competition between suppliers due to the lack of any telecommunications infrastructure and higher costs for deployment in rural areas.
On 16 August 2011 the Government, as part of its £530 million investment in the UK’s broadband network, announced a £363 million distribution of funding for England counties and Scotland.
Derbyshire County Council (including Derby City) has been allocated an indicative sum of £7.39 million, based on Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) assumption of 468,971 premises of which 188,043 are located in a ‘white area’. BDUK define a ‘white area’ as an area with limited or no broadband provision which is eligible for State support to receive quality Broadband.
Derbyshire County Council has developed a promotional strategy to engage with the businesses and residents of Derbyshire, this includes a ‘community broadband’ section of the council’s website, broadband surveys, educational activity and general awareness raising. They also want to know your experiences so that they can prioritise their work, encourage companies to improve broadband in your area, and target investment. The findings of the survey will form a key part in helping attract funding − including a £7.3 million Government pledge.
So please help us to help you by taking a few minutes to complete the simple survey |- there is one for residents and one for businesses - or email your comments to broadband@derbyshire.gov.uk
