Employment & Skills

The overall vision for the Employment, Learning and Skills theme is to help support employers to have a highly skilled, adaptable workforce equipped for the modern economy and to get more people into better jobs in better businesses.

Employment, learning and skills are key drivers of economic success and to be able to compete in a global economy, employers need a workforce with the appropriate skills. Individuals also need access to a range of opportunities that will equip them with the qualifications and skills to make our businesses more competitive and improve our overall quality of life.

Our employment and skills programme focuses on developing the demand for skills, through working with partners to influence and enhance mainstream education and by working with partners to develop the skills offering, and communicating it to businesses and individuals. We hope to encourage young people and adults to aim high, encourage businesses to invest in people and ultimately take advantage of the economic prosperity that employment and higher level skills can bring to the sub region.

Sub regional priorities are to ensure that Derbyshire has a better skilled workforce through:

  • Increasing business engagement in workforce development
  • Increasing the numbers achieving recognised qualifications at/or equivalent to NVQ levels 2 and above
  • Maximise skills, particularly amongst the SME business community, in leadership, management and entrepreneurship
  • Improving the quality of the facilities and access to learning
  • Reducing barriers to training for businesses in key sub regional sectors
  • Increasing knowledge in the use of ICT for business and learning
  • Encourage the retention of graduates through practical work placements and employment programmes
  • We provide support in key sectors where workforce and management development is most needed, as well as increasing the overall effectiveness of Derbyshire's business and their ability to innovate.
  • Promoting STEM

Derbyshire Economic Partnership supports a number of projects that are designed to raise business demand for skills, support training providers to rise to the challenge of meeting the demands of a changing economy and help people improve their skills. We also work through our partner organisations to ensure that we have a dynamic, flexible and highly adaptable workforce.
The challenges for the future are around the future skill requirements for Derbyshire and how we ensure that we have the right skills (higher level skills) for what business demands are.
