DDEP LAUNCHES NEW RURAL ACTION PLANS

Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DDEP) has launched two new action plans outlining its plans for developing the rural economy within the sub-region.

The Sub-Regional Rural Action Plan outlines DDEP's policies for economic development within rural areas of Derbyshire. The Peak District Rural Action Zone (RAZ) plan sits within this, providing a framework for rural development activity in the area, which encompasses High Peak, Derbyshire Dales and parts of Staffordshire Moorlands and East Staffordshire.

The Sub-Regional Rural Action Plan aims to provide a strong focus on rural issues and opportunities across the sub-region. It will build on experience gained within the RAZ to benefit other rural communities by raising the profile of rural issues, influencing DDEP's sub regional investment activity and contributing to its investment plan. It also seeks to encourage partnerships and links with other organisations to ensure efficient use of resources within rural areas.

The RAZ Action Plan aims to improve the prosperity and overall environment for businesses, communities, individuals and visitors across the Peak District.

The RAZ Action Plan for 2008 - 2011 builds on objectives and priorities outlined in the previous 2005 - 2008 plan, maintaining emphasis on a high skills - high wage economy and cross regional boundary approach.

Both the Sub-Regional Rural Action Plan and RAZ Action Plans focus on three main objectives: to develop a Productive Rural Economy, to develop Productive Market Towns supporting the surrounding rural areas, and to support Services for a Sustainable Rural Economy.

Commenting on the new plans, Cllr Lewis Rose, DDEP Board member and Chairman of the Peak District Rural Action Zone said:

''The two DDEP Rural Action Plans have been designed to highlight issues affecting the rural economy, identify solutions to combat these problems and develop opportunities offered by the area to improve the quality of life in the Peak District and Derbyshire sub-region.''

''The 2005 - 2008 RAZ action plan was a major success, which we aim to build on through the launch of the new 2008 - 2011 plan.

''What's more, the development of the new Sub-Regional Rural Action Plan will allow us to widen our focus to support and encourage economic development amongst rural communities not just in the RAZ but across the whole of the Derbyshire sub-region,'' added Cllr Rose.
