Rural Derbyshire

Rural Derbyshire accounts for about 77% of the county, stretching from the internationally significant Peak District National Park in the North West, to the National Forest in the South with the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site corridor in between. There are a variety of communities in these areas ranging from market towns and villages to small hamlets and dispersed settlements, each with their own challenges to ensure that people are not disadvantaged through living, working or socialising in these areas.

Rural Action Zone Rural Action Plan 2008-2011 |was produced to develop the rural agenda within the work of DEP and focusses on new activities specific to the allocation of the Single Programme Budget from DEP. The Action Plan informs the work of the Rural Forum that meets to champion the Rural Area.  Following a successful bid to emda and Advantage West Midlands, the Rural Action Plan has been aligned with the new Local Development Strategy to deliver the LEADER approach in the area through the Rural Development Programme for England up until 2013.

The Rural Action Plan links with the Sub Regional Rural Action Plan 2008-2011, which aims to spread good practice and experience from rural economic development in the area into the wider rural areas of Derbyshire. This Action Plan was produced after consultation with partner organisations and will be delivered through DEP funded projects and partnership activity.

In April 2009 DEP assumed responsibility for delivering services for the whole of Derbyshire, excluding the City of Derby. Bolsover and North East Derbyshire are now supported by DEP the additional area was also awarded funding to deliver the LEADER |approach in their area through the RDPE until 2013.

The delivery of the plans will be overseen by the DEP Rural Forum which will help champion rural issues within the Sub Region and beyond. To view both action plans and tables click on related documents.

The Sub Regional Rural Action Plan 2008-2011 also links into DEP’s Sub Regional Investment Plan|. This ensures that activity delivered at local level complements the overall strategic objectives of the sub region that contributes effectively to the Regional Economic Strategy.

By signing up to EMRAF’s Rural Charter, DEP has a commitment to the rural sector, particularly when considering policy and project decisions.
