Youlgrave Well taps conservation and interpretation

The project was to restore 12 historic communal taps. Taps from which residents of Youlgrave and Middleton would have traditionally drawn water before homes were connected to mains water.

The stone work surrounds were restored as were the gratings where necessary.

An interpretation board was also purchased to provide information about the water supply to the area and the significance of the taps. It also shows the link between the supply of water and well dressing and shows a walk encompassing all the 12 sites.

Although it had long been an aspiration of Waterworks Ltd to restore the well taps funds have not been available. The Leader funding has enabled a heritage walk to be publicised bringing additional tourism into the area and in turn stimulating the local economy.

Leader grant £3,318.07.
